* from Irish moll óir (“heap of gold”) However, this is unlikely because of the difference in pronunciation.

* from Chinook Jargon moola (“mill”)
* from Sanskrit मूल (mūla, “capital, principal”)
* coined by Chuck Green, a friend of Damon Runyon
