Cognate with Old Frisian sted (“bank, shore”), Middle High German stat (“bank, shore”) (German Gestade), dialectal Norwegian stad (“riverbank”), Icelandic stöð (“a harbour, roadstead, port, landing”); akin to Old English stede (“place”).
