Noun

  • A North African or Arabian inn or hotel.

Origin / Etymology

From Arabic فُنْدُق (funduq, “inn, hotel; manor”) possibly via French fondouk, from Ancient Greek πανδοκεῖον (pandokeîon), from πᾰν- (păn-, “all, every”) + the combining form of δέχεσθαι (dékhesthai, “to receive”) + -εῖον (-eîon, “-ium: forming building names”). The Arabic word entered and was borrowed between European languages repeatedly in various forms; this form is attested in English from the 19th century. Doublet of fonda and fondaco.
