Origin / Etymology
A modification, due to folk etymology, of cormorant by combining it with Latin vorantem, the accusative masculine or feminine singular of vorāns (“devouring; swallowing up”), the present active participle of vorō (“to devour, eat greedily; to swallow up”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷerh₃- (“to devour, eat; to swallow”).
